UPDATE: April 8th 2009~ We have identified the Artist that designed the cabinet, including the Aloha 'Oe storyboard. He was a Scotsman named William Cowie (b. 1858-d. unknown). Cowie was the lead artisan at the "HIGH CLASS FVRNITVRE" division at the 19th century Raleigh Works of Shapland & Petter LTD., Barnstaple, North Devon. A Royal commission for: HRH Lydia Liliu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaeha, better known as Queen Lili'uokalani (b. 1838- d.1917). Designed around ALOHA 'OE, the cabinet displays the bird delighting to the beauty of the Maunawili rose blossom (in Kailua), the last line and summation of Aloha 'Oe (1878). UPDATE January 2008: The cabinet did not belong to Princess Ka'iulani, but was instead commissioned for her aunt, the Queen Lili'uokalani. Most likely an 1891 Gift of Ascension from Queen Victoria. A songwriter's console, Liliuokalani's never-before-seen musical notations can be viewed on the interior of the cabinet. In some cases she replaces her capital "Ps" for musical half-notes. She also does this in her writings. The King Henry the IV quote is a political statement: A Royal Proclamation from The Prince of Wales, "SHE WILL SING THE SONG THAT PLEASETH YOU" with na pua rose, representing the Hawaiian people, on either side. The Shakespearean quote refers to a female monarch, a foreigner to England, that communicated best through song. Shakespeare was Liliuokalani's favorite author.
